Healthcare managers working in home health, hospice and community-based settings should receive continuing education training for lower-confidence tasks such as budgeting and strategic planning and various manager roles, according to new research. The study involved a cross-sectional survey of managers at a large Visiting Nurse Association, using factor and cluster analyses to compare differences by role. Managers with six or more years of experience expressed higher confidence than managers with five years or less experience for all 33 management tasks in the survey. Tasks managers rated the lowest in terms of confidence included interpreting annual reports, budgeting, measuring organizational performance, strategic planning and project planning. The researchers noted that "management training is not one-size-fits-all."
