Physician Assistant PhD Programs on the Rise

Researchers investigated trends in the characteristics of doctoral programs for physician-assistants (PAs) in the United States. The study, which focused on 24 PA-specific, post-professional doctoral programs, found that most of the programs had been around for less than 3 years and all were accredited regionally. All of the programs were available to students with a master's degree; however, two programs also had bridge pathways of study. Doctor of medical science was the most frequently awarded credential. Total credit hours varied widely, ranging from 12 to 60 credits. Overall, there were a few themes to the educational format, with variation at each institution, and all of the programs highlighted leadership, academia, and clinical practice advancement.
