Mobile Simulation Program Brings Medical Training to Washington Communities

In Washington state, a new mobile simulation unit will bring simulation training to rural community physicians looking to further their skills. The mobile unit, in the form of a Ford F-350 with a truck bed topper, was recently unveiled by the Washington State University (WSU) Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine. While some physicians may seek specialized certification in areas such as laparoscopic surgery as part of their continuing medical education requirements, laparoscopy training was previously only available to Washington physicians if they traveled to Seattle or went out of state. The mobile unit will enable staff from the WSU College of Medicine's Virtual Clinical Center in Spokane to bring equipment and their simulation skills to classrooms and other spaces across Washington, helping WSU medical students and resident physicians, faculty preceptors and others. "It was always our goal as a college to have a mobile simulation presence across the state," said Chris Martin, EdD, director of simulation-based training. "The mobile simulation unit helps make that a reality."
