Academic Service Partnerships: A 21st Century Business Strategy to Integrate Physician Assistant Learners into a Value-Based Healthcare Delivery Model

Academic service partnerships have developed as a useful solution to the problem of where to provide required clinical experience for physician assistant (PA) learners. Some programs used to have transactional relationships with individual clinicians, hospitals, community health centers and others, exchanging supervised clinical experience for incentives such as continuing medical education credit. However, in the current value-based care model in the United States, academic service partnerships have emerged as a way for the increasing number of PA learners to get the necessary clinical training. Researchers note, "Academic service partnerships uniquely integrate health professions learners into health systems by providing more sustainable, results-driven clinical experiences that benefit the program, the clinical training site and the patients."
