Continuing Education in Diversity and Multicultural Factors: Current State Psychology Board Requirements and a Call to Action

The Asian Neuropsychological Association Advocacy Committee (ANAAC) reviewed continuing education (CE) requirements for all U.S. states to characterize current state psychology board mandates for incorporating diversity-related factors into clinical neuropsychology. The panel found only eight states required CE credits related to such factors for licensure renewal. "Given how inseparable cultural competence is from any aspect of clinical work (and the harm that can be done if culture is not considered), it is essential that our field shift from aspirational guidance to firm requirements with regard to cultural competence and diversity-related training in psychology," the ANAAC recommended. One channel for achieving this objective, the committee suggested, is to make CE units concentrating on diversity-related factors mandatory.
