Videos for Psychiatric Education: Could Deidentification Technology Make It Possible to Use Video Recordings of Patients for Psychiatric Education?

The use of patient videos in psychiatric education has been limited due to concerns about patient privacy, confidentiality and dignity. However, emerging methods of deidentification aim to preserve facial expressions in video recordings while still protecting the patients themselves. Researchers suggest, "Fully anonymized videos could be used to augment the education of psychiatric residents and for continuing education of the psychiatric workforce." While novel deidentification technology could make this a reality, the researchers also note there are issues that would first need to be resolved before psychiatric education could benefit from such advances.
