Using ‘Board Games’ to Improve the Effectiveness of Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Care for Nurses in Intensive Care Unit

Board games can help to increase nurses' care knowledge, clinical reasoning and learning engagement about extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), according to new research. The study included a sample of 73 ICU nurses, with 37 receiving ECMO care training through specially designed board games and 36 receiving training via a more traditional teaching approach. The two groups had similar levels of ECMO care knowledge and learning engagement before the intervention, but they had a notable difference in clinical reasoning. The intervention group had substantially higher scores in ECMO care knowledge, clinical reasoning and learning engagement compared with the control group one week (p <0.01) and three weeks (p <0.001) after the intervention. Given the complexity and difficulty of the content for ECMO care, the researchers note that using board games can be used to increase learning effectiveness about ECMO care knowledge and clinical reasoning, and other challenging subjects could benefit from this teaching strategy as well.
