Transitioning To Virtual Academic Detailing Amid COVID-19: A Case Study

Researchers conducted a case study exploring the transition to virtual academic detailing (AD) for primary care providers during the COVID-19 pandemic. The case study included observations of AD visits, group and one-on-one interviews, and a document analysis of curriculum and policy documents. According to the analysis, strengths of AD include the benefits of virtual programming, pre-existing strengths in program leadership, the global shift to telehealth during the pandemic and pharmacists' pre-existing roles and attributes. Obstacles include technological issues, consistency across modalities and having a virtual presence in group visits. Going forward, the researchers suggest, a blended model that "balances strengths and challenges of virtual and in-person delivery, and considers logistics, efficiencies, environmental impacts and unique participant needs" could be used.
