The American Board of Medical Specialties Affirms Support of Member Boards' Diplomates Providing Medical Care Based upon the Standards of Their Specialty

ABMS News Release (11/15/22)

The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) asserts in a position statement that certification by ABMS member boards "is an indicator of expertise and trustworthiness and is relied upon by both the public and members of the medical community." The board expects member boards' diplomates to comply with their specialty's medical care and professionalism standards. Although such certification has traditionally demanded state licensure, the ABMS Board of Directors has determined that member boards "will not be required to take reciprocal certification action when a license has been revoked or otherwise sanctioned solely because the appropriate, medically necessary care provided to an informed and consenting patient was in opposition to a mandate lacking scientific, safety, or specialty-based justifications." This decision "will enable ABMS member boards to advance their commitment to prioritizing patient welfare and shared decision-making," ABMS concludes.
