As academic healthcare leaders seek effective organizational improvement techniques, three commonly used approaches are strategic planning, strategic thinking and continuous process improvement. These approaches have been used in a variety of ways in healthcare, higher education and industry, but their processes may be misunderstood in practice. To clarify their meanings and avoid any confusion when they are used, researchers provide an overview of these techniques, their definitions and their advantages and disadvantages. Additionally, they describe one tool in each category, including the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats analysis for strategic planning. For strategic planning, the authors review the Goals, Objectives, Strategies and Tactics model, while they explain the Pareto Chart for continuous process improvement.
