Recertification Through Longitudinal Assessment for PAs

The National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants introduced in 2023 the Physician Assistant National Recertification Examination-Longitudinal Assessment (PANRE-LA). The LA testing approach that "promotes continuous acquisition and application of knowledge over time," writes Jaclyn M. Demeter, assistant professor in the PA program at Butler University in Indianapolis. Although many certifying organizations are using LA for recertification and knowledge advancement, there is little in the literature about its effect for PAs. "In the changing landscape of [maintenance of certification] with LA becoming a recertification standard, PAs benefit from understanding the history, educational advantages, and importance of LA as a MOC tool," Demeter concludes.
