Online Delivery of Interprofessional Adverse Childhood Experiences Training to Rural Providers: Usability Study

Interprofessional workforce training about adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and trauma-informed care is effective and feasible, researchers say. In this study, the authors report on their efforts to create an online ACEs training curriculum for providers in Missouri. The content for the course was developed following literature reviews and environmental scans of sources including training videos, partner organizations, clinical practice guidelines, and community-based resources. The program was then certified for continuing medical education and also for continuing education for licensed professional counselors, psychologists, and social workers. After recruitment efforts that included key stakeholder email invitations and snowball recruitment, 135 Missouri providers indicated they would like to participate. Of the 98 who ultimately enrolled and accessed the training, 49% finished all of the course requirements. All of the respondents reported that the ACE training content was relevant to their work, life, or practice; said they plan to apply the content and feel confident doing so; and indicated they would recommend the program to other providers.
