Microlearning and Online Simulation-based Virtual Consultation Training Module for the Undergraduate Medical Curriculum – A Preliminary Evaluation

A preliminary analysis of a competency-based virtual consultation (VC) training module for senior medical students found that asynchronous microlearning and simulation-based sessions were effective means of providing VC education in this population. The six-week program featured video-recorded assessments of VC encounters between the medical students and simulated patients. Trained facilitators then evaluated the videos using a directly observed VC skills checklist. Of the 52 clinical phase medical students and recent graduates who completed the instructional and practical phases of the VC training module, approximately 96% said the module was useful and reported it boosted their self-efficacy for conducting VCs. The students' significantly improved skills in conducting a VC were confirmed in a post-test evaluation, and most said they would recommend the training module to others.
