Learning to Lead: An Exploration of Leadership Development in Obstetrics and Gynaecology

To better understand the development of leadership skills in the obstetrics and gynecology arena, Canadian researchers conducted a national survey and eight interviews of residents, fellows and staff physicians in the specialty. Among the 225 respondents, 87% assessed the effectiveness of their leadership skills positively. Most of the participants — 98% — said further training would be useful. In the interviews, common themes included that skills in leadership can be taught, there should be intent in leadership training and roles and that changes to the current model could help address obstacles to training.
