Identifying the Essential Knowledge and Skills for Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine: A Systematic Analysis of Practice

A systematic review explored the knowledge and skills that should reflect the clinical practice of neonatology for board certification in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine (NPM). The American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) organized a 14-member panel of practicing neonatologists to draw up a practice analysis document that specified essential practice domains, tasks, knowledge, and skills. The document was revised based on the results of an online survey of NPM fellowship program directors. The panel then structured testable knowledge areas into content domains and subdomains to amend the ABP NPM content outline. ABP-certified neonatologists were asked to review the document, and the results guided the final modifications to the content outline. The document and outline should benefit educators, trainees, and neonatologists in their practice, the researchers report.
