Evolution of a Continuing Professional Development Program Based on a Community of Practice Model for Healthcare Professionals in Resource-Limited Settings

Researchers based a continuing professional development program on a community of practice (CoP) framework in order to enhance knowledge and share practices among healthcare professionals in resource-limited environments. Program participants learned and interacted via an online platform, videoconferencing, instant messaging systems and an email listserv. In the first year, five of 11 participants earned a certificate of completion, while 17 of 45 participants did so in the second year. The pretest and posttest scores increased for most program modules. Most participants rated the modules' relevance and usefulness as good or outstanding. "Using a CoP framework allowed participants to improve their personal knowledge and become part of a learning community and network of interdisciplinary healthcare professionals," the researchers note.
