Developing a Video-Based Learning Module to Teach Decision-Making for Cubital Tunnel Surgery

Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (10/01/22) Vol. 150, No. 4, P. 810e Yee, Andrew; Padovano, William M.; Patterson, J. Megan M.; et al.

Researchers devised a video-based education module to teach decision-making for cubital tunnel surgery. The module included prelecture and postlecture knowledge assessments and the choice of two self-guided video lectures on a peer-reviewed decision algorithm. Knowledge retention was assessed three months after completion. In all, 279 surgeons participated (75% practicing surgeons and 25% trainees). The postlecture assessment was completed by 112 surgeons, and 71 completed the knowledge retention assessment. Participants scored an average 5 out of 10 questions on the prelecture assessment, with a 3-point gain seen in the postlecture evaluation. The knowledge retention assessment saw a median score of 8 out of 10 questions, with participants maintaining a 2-point increase over their prelecture score. Sixty-eight percent of surgeons who completed the knowledge retention assessment reported revising their management of cubital tunnel syndrome, 17% were undecided, and 15% reported no change. Moreover, 76% favored the module over a traditional conference presentation and 96% thought the knowledge assessments improved their learning versus the lectures alone. "This novel study introduces a framework for the development of online multimedia modules for surgical education," the authors note.
