Clinician Educator Milestones: Assessing and Improving Educators' Skills

A work group brought together by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education, Association of American Medical Colleges and American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine in 2020 developed the Clinician Educator Milestones (CEMs). The CEMs are a set of competencies, subcompetencies and milestones for CEs to help formally acknowledge when they have the knowledge and skills to be successful in their roles. Using a five-step process, the work group first developed a draft CEM and then identified 141 potential education-related CE tasks, including descriptive statements for the competencies and developmental trajectories for the subcompetencies. A supplemental guide, assessment tools and other resources were developed as well. A group of CEs then provided feedback on the CEMs, which the work group then used to refine them. After a second draft was submitted for public comment and the CEMs were finalized, the CEMs were made available for use in 2022. CEs can use the resulting product — which includes a foundational domain focused on commitment to lifelong learning, four domains of competence for the CE in the learning environment and 20 subcompetencies — for self-assessment, creating learning and improvement plans and developing systematic faculty development processes, among other benefits.
