Clinical Educators Professional Development Utilizing Clinical Educators Milestones — Qualitative Thematic Analysis

Journal of Continuing Education in the Health Professions (07/08/25) Goulder, Lewis; Jinks, Paul; Omer, Selma

Researchers developed the Clinician Educator Milestones (CEMs), a set of competencies designed to support the development of teaching and learning skills for medical faculty. To evaluate the effectiveness of the CEMs for self-assessment and goal-setting in medical education, participants in a medical education course used the CEMs to help create educational development plans. In interviews, participants indicated the value of CEMs for goal-setting, as they helped to demonstrate development needs and show the support needed. Themes identified included developing a clear vision for professional development, identifying new perspectives, and recognizing educational role models. "The structured approach facilitated by CEMs aligns with the principles of Self-Determination Theory, empowering educators to take control of their development, enhance competence, and foster a sense of belonging within the medical education community," the researchers report. CEMs are an effective tool for fostering educators' development and promoting well-being, according to this study.
