Building a More Inclusive Environment: Lessons Learned From 2 Years of Microaggression Workshops

A workshop developed in 2020 to address microaggressions in medicine has shown positive results in participant confidence. Since its launch in early 2022, more than 1,400 individuals have participated, with post-workshop surveys indicating a significant and sustained increase in participants' confidence to recognize and respond to microaggressions. The results highlight the effectiveness of such workshops and show they can be delivered effectively at scale. After facilitating numerous workshop sessions, the study authors report that storytelling is a more effective way of engaging audiences than research data. Furthermore, they note that facilitators must be mindful of the potential for participants to experience retraumatization and that significant variations in participants' knowledge levels are common.
