Building a Better Surgeon: FAMU-FSU College of Engineering Researchers Develop Artificial Intelligence Tool for Surgical Training

Florida State University News (08/02/24) Radulovich, Trisha

Researchers have developed a training tool that analyzes video of a surgeon's technique and gives feedback. The VBA-Net tool, powered by artificial intelligence (AI), watches full-length videos of surgical tasks and provides the learner with final scores and online feedback. Developed by the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering, the AI platform combines deep neural network technology and video-based surgical assessment. Suvranu De, the Google endowed dean of the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering, explains: "This tool can offer valuable support to evaluators and has the potential to ensure greater consistency in assessments. Our objective is to streamline the evaluation process by guiding trainees in their focus to the most critical facets of a surgical procedure." De and colleagues recently published an article about the new surgical training tool in JAMA Surgery.
