Are You Collecting the Right Information for Disclosures?

When developing accredited continuing education (CE), accredited providers must ensure that all planners, planners, and others involved with educational content disclose all their financial relationships with ineligible companies in previous 24 months. According to Standard 3, "Individuals must disclose regardless of their view of the relevance of the relationship to the education." Accredited providers can then determine if the relationships are pertinent — it is not up to the individuals to determine which ones they believe are relevant. The Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) has a sample disclosure form here. Providers using their own forms or process to collect disclosure information should compare theirs to ACCME's to ensure they meet all expectations. ACCME has also created a short video for planners, faculty speakers, authors, and reviewers that discusses the part that those in control of content have in safeguarding the integrity of accredited CE.
