AMA Adopts Policy to Advance AI Literacy in Medical Education

At its Interim Meeting, the American Medical Association (AMA) adopted a new policy to expand Augmented Intelligence (AI) training across the medical education continuum. The move aims to bolster the physician workforce and improve patient outcomes through standardized AI instruction in medical schools and enhanced access to AI-focused continuing medical education. The AMA will develop model learning objectives and curricular toolkits, collaborate with medical organizations to promote AI literacy, and advocate for funding and faculty development. This initiative aligns with the AMA's Center for Digital Health and AI, launched in October, which seeks to embed physician expertise into digital health tools and reduce burnout. Additionally, the AMA approved a resolution to combat the growing threat of deepfake technology, supporting federal legislation to protect patients and physicians from misleading content, as deepfake “doctors” on social media increasingly promote unsafe treatments, eroding trust in medical practice.
