ABMS Member Board Certified Doctors Are 'One in a Million'

ABMS News Release (11/05/25)

A new report from the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) shows that a record 1,025,104 physicians and medical specialists are currently certified by its 24 Member Boards. The figure, an increase of more than 27,000 diplomates from the previous year, highlights "the value of board certification as a trusted credential and reflects our diplomates' ongoing commitment to meeting the rigorous standards essential to providing high-quality patient care," according to ABMS President and CEO Richard E. Hawkins, MD. ABMS board certification, a voluntary post-residency credential, serves as a trusted indicator of a provider's expertise and commitment to high-quality care. The 2024–2025 report shows that the Member Boards awarded 34,619 new specialty and 17,528 subspecialty certificates. Additionally, the report reveals that the median age of diplomates is 53 years, and 34.3% of active diplomates are women. ABMS also offers public tools — CertificationMatters.org and the ABMS Data Viewer — to help patients verify credentials and explore certification data.
