BMC Medical Education (03/27/2024) Ballaram, Sholene; Perumal-Pillay, Velisha; Suleman, Fatima

A scoping review explored global models of continuing professional education (CPE) and continuing professional development (CPD) models for pharmacists and statutory requirements for pharmacists' registration and licensure. A literature search of articles published from January 2012 and February 2023 identified 24 relevant studies, more than half of which (14) were from high-income countries (HICs). Twenty-one studies used the mandatory CPD points system. The researchers note the CPE/CPD is not mandatory in some HICs and upper-middle income countries. Nearly 80% of the countries represented offer lifelong learning in multiple formats; however, face-to-face learning is the preferred mode of instruction. Pharmacists' preferred face-to-face learning in 13 of the studies. Other formats mentioned include blended learning and workplace learning. "Structured planning for LLL activities is increasingly a global requirement for pharmacists' licensure," the researchers note. "The essential progression of pharmacy practice in developing healthcare systems necessitates a mandatory CPD model." They recommend further research "to fortify the implementation, align and unify the CPD model with evolving pharmacy profession needs."
