A Qualitative Study to Understand the Cultural-Level Factors That Influence Clinical Data Use for Continuing Professional Development

Investigators analyzed physicians' perception of cultural factors — individual, organizational and systemic — influence how clinical data informs lifelong learning and self-administered continuing professional development. The authors interviewed 17 psychiatrists and 11 general surgeons from Canada and the United States. An analysis of interviews uncovered three major themes: a strong relationship between data and trust; a team-based approach to data-informed learning for practice improvement; and the need for organizational backing and advocacy to apply data practically. "Building trust, taking a team-based approach and engaging multiple stakeholders, such as data specialists and organizational leadership, may significantly improve the use of data-informed learning," the authors noted.
