The Educational Impact of Web-Based, Faculty-Led Continuing Medical Education Programs in Type 2 Diabetes: A Survey Study to Analyze Changes in Knowledge, Competence and Performance of Health Care Pro

Researchers developed two continuing medical education (CME)-accredited online educational activities about type 2 diabetes (T2D) and obesity to assess learner satisfaction, competence and performance. The faculty-led touchIN CONVERSATION and touch MultiDisciplinary Team activities each featured three 10- to 15-minute videos covering learning objectives based on a review of published literature and faculty commentary. Some 6,000 participants viewed each activity within six months and said they were highly satisfied with both. Participation in the touchIN CONVERSATION activity elicited statistically significant improvements from baseline in knowledge and competence. The touch MultiDisciplinary Team activity's increase in knowledge and competence was not significant. A combined analysis of both courses showed that healthcare professionals' (HCP) self-reported performance improved. Educational gaps that were identified include use of time-in-range metrics in continuous glucose monitoring to optimize glycemic regulation; managing treatment regimens to avoid hypoglycemia in T2D patients; and effectiveness data for emergent antihyperglycemic agents for T2D and their clinical application. The authors concluded, "Short, case-based, patient-focused and multidisciplinary team–led CME activities that HCPs can fit into their clinical schedules achieved high levels of satisfaction and improvements in HCP knowledge and competence, along with self-reported performance in T2D management."
