New Clinician Educator Milestones Provide Pathways for Professional Development and Framework for Assessment

ACCME Highlights (09/21/22)

The Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine, and Association of American Medical Colleges have issued the first-ever Clinician Educator Milestones. The framework was created to assist in the development and improvement of teaching and learning skills throughout medical education. It offers a developmental path for knowledge, skills, and behaviors for four competencies (Administration; Educational Theory and Practice; Well-Being; and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) as well as Universal Pillars for lifelong learning. "This framework not only covers a wide range of sub-competencies in professional development, but also empowers educators to assess their own skillset and identify areas for improvement," said ACCME President and CEO Graham McMahon, MD, MMSc. The milestones expand "on the competency-based medical education method to frame education and assessment around acquisition of knowledge and skills essential for healthcare professionals," according to ACCME.
