Graduate Medical Education Can Be an Impetus for Behavior Changes in Physicians in Practice

Researchers evaluated the benefits of a multifaceted faculty development program for anesthesiologist residents incorporating point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) within their practice. The program involved online prework, a two-day workshop, hands-on sessions, regular communication and equipment acquisition. Presurveys and postsurveys also measured changes in confidence and self-reported usage of POCUS. Completed examinations and providers completing at least one examination appeared to grow in number between May 2017 and October 2018. The number of completed examinations increased by about one per month from August 2017 through October 2018, while the number of providers completing examinations rose by about 0.61 per month. The authors conclude that the faculty-focused intervention can boost POCUS utilization both in practice and in residents' views of education.
