Gender-Inclusive Fellowship Naming and Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in Radiology: An Analysis of Radiology Department Websites in Canada and the United States

A cross-sectional review evaluated gender-inclusive language for Canadian and U.S. institutions that offer training in breast imaging, women's imaging or breast and body imaging. Data was collated from each institution's radiology department website referring to fellowship names, education/diversity/inclusion (EDI) involvement and continuing medical education (CME) courses. Eight Canadian and 71 U.S. radiology fellowships were covered; 75% of the former fellowships and 90% of the latter had gender-inclusive names. One Canadian (12.5%) and 29 (41%) U.S. institutions mentioned EDI Committees on their websites. Gender-inclusive names were used by just one (25%) Canadian institution publicly displaying CME courses about breast/body or women's imaging and 81% of the U.S. institutions. The authors noted the significant opportunity and responsibility for North American institutions in boosting the impact and visibility of their EDI efforts by establishing department-specific committees and CME courses.
