Faculty Development Offered by U.S. Medical Schools

The 2017 Annual Council on Medical Student Education in Pediatrics Survey investigated the frequency and topics of faculty development (FD) on teaching skills offered at U.S. medical institutions. The survey also assessed the schools' approaches for incentivizing and monitoring participation. In all, two-thirds (97) of the 148 pediatric educators at medical schools surveyed responded, and most (98%) said they were offered FD on teaching. Most of the respondents said FD was offered at least every year. A number of FD topics were reported, with feedback and precepting most frequently cited. Incentives included continuing medical education credit (39%) and relief from clinical duties (23%). Still, the study authors note, only 29% of schools said FD had little support and just 20% said their department tracked FD participation externally.
