Creating Worthy Learning Objectives

Worthy learning objectives are essential for continuing medical education and continuing professional development (CPD), assert Queen's University Professor Eleftherios F. Soleas and University of Manitoba Professor Helen Mawdsley. "Worthy learning objectives must be learner-focused, and not speaker-focused," they write. The Society for Academic Continuing Medical Education CE Educational Toolkit offers the TACT (Target, Action, Context, Time) framework to create strong and worthy objectives. Soleas and Mawdsley emphasize the need to ensure program goals are clear and aligned with learning objectives Learning objectives can dovetail with other learning objectives, in addition to CPD program goals, accreditation standards and professional competencies. "When learning objectives are aligned, it provides transparency and clarity on what is being taught, and why it is important," the authors observe. They also recommend that providers consider learning objectives, learning and instruction to review which strategies are effective and which ones are not.
